faux bois

faux bois

Fake wood- like just about everything- sounds so much better in French. There is a playful element of theater in faux bois objects d'art that surprises and delights, as would-be 'wood' is made of something else- ceramic, concrete, fabric, wallpaper or papier-mâché. Since the mid-19th century, trompe-l'œil technique has been sometimes kitsch, often chic, always charming.

French Faux Bois Cedar Chest

Circa 1880, an exceptional French faux bois cedar chest covered in paper mâché and cedar panels on all six sides. Fantastic branch-form handle. Some cracking due to paper mâché shrinking which is typical of these items.
